Treatment of alcoholism is a slow process. But before understanding the treatment part it is necessary to understand the meaning of alcoholism. Alcoholism is the habitual intake of alcohol or other drugs which lead to impaired thinking and causes ill effects on thinking. The biggest problem faced in alcoholism is the craving for alcohol which is difficult to control and leads the person to fall again for alcohol. Currently only few medications are present to control alcohol addiction and let us now discuss about the medications available for the treatment purpose.
The medications which are available are Ant abuse, Naltrexone and Acamprosate. Ant abuse works by causing a severe impact on the brain to take or consume alcohol. Naltrexone, work by blocking the brains the urge that people experience when they drink. Acamprosate also called as the Campral commonly is the one and only medicine that can reduce the alcohol craving along with it reduces discomfort.
But if we talk basically there are two types of medications that help in treating alcoholism. The first one to reduce alcohol craving and the other is taken at the time of withdrawal. The first one is to be taken in the very beginning of the alcohol treatment and they are also known as the tranquilizers. With the help of theses medicines the patient does not feel the urge or the craving to drink. They help the person to come out of the initial stages of the addiction. The names of the medicines are Valium and Librium which are cheaply and easily available.
The second type is taken after that is called Naltrexone, these drugs help the addicted person to stay away from the alcohol and it is important to stay sober for a person at this stage. This medicine is used for rapid recovery or for fast Detox treatment. Along with this the counseling plays an important role. There is another type of an old method of treatment is aversion treatment in which the medicine given is called as disaffirms which cause an acute.
